There’s some clear reasons for this intentional economic attack by domestic enemies, and they are now clearly a domestic enemy to the Constitution. Oath-breakers. One reason is to further purge the middle class property owners by driving them out of their land and assets so they rich can finish buying it up (this is also why Gianforte raised property taxes but refuses to properly tax trophy ranches and farms). A second reason is to drive the lower class even further into poverty to radicalize them. They will then continue to blame everything on “the radical left” and promote violence. Third, they will push us into war claiming it’s what we need to fix the economy. It’s upper class bolshevism carried out by cowards and traitors.
Very interesting to read. Canadian here in SK. Nice to see a reasoned explanation/ description of the "find out" stage for electing Trump & Republicans specific to Montana.
I don't have a " dog in the race" but watching the out right lies these Republicans told was stupifying. Too clueless and wanting to be lied to. Own the libs !!! Those voters starring to reap the consequences. Well the libs might be owned but that " i fucking told you" shit sandwich is pretty shitty.
The worst is the people most effected are the poor who can least afford it. The rich, zinke, the Gov, the new Republican senator who won over Testor (grave loss)- they will be fine. They don't give a rats ass about those who suffer.
Great fantasy yarn your so-called economist has spun. I refer you read Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell and Capitalism and Freedon by Milton Friedman if you want to truly understand economic system.
Hey Jim - he's not "mine" he was selected by a bunch of very conservative bankers in a very conservative place. Lots of big business pay for his opinion because he's good. Furthermore, Sowell and Friedman never dreamed of advising handing the federal govt to a chainsaw-wielding nazi from South Africa and then telling him to dismantle agencies on which the economy relies. Further, neither ever dreamt of imposing a pile of herky-jerky tariffs, which both increase inflation and insert untold amounts of uncertainty into the economy. Any other comments?
Wow. Just think: you could have voted for Harris, the negro woman, who would have steered a steady course, kept building the economy and not released 1600 cop killing felons from jail. Rest assured if you don’t enjoy your pain to come in Montana, I will. Cowboy hats for all and chainsaws.
Republicans, of course, want to eventually sell off our public lands to the highest bidder. In general, they welcome a recession. Prices drop and all those rich carpetbaggers who have moved into the state can then buy our state at fire sale prices. The rich always have plenty of money, even during a recession, while your average Montanan suffers.
Thank you for the well thought out and fact based post. Many people are blinded by their hatred to see the negative economic impacts that Trump’s spiteful and ignorant policies will have on all people in MT, especially folks in the rural areas of the state.
I'm so glad you're writing for Substack. Your posts are outstanding (and well referenced!). I'm forwarding this Substack to The Rachel Maddow Show. She is an ally of Montana's public lands and its fish/wildlife; I think this essay would resonate with her. You deserve national exposure and Zinke, Daines, Sheehy, and Downing deserve national pushback.
Honorable Ryan Busse, I'm happy to have a chance to thank you publicly for running for Governor! Such a missed opportunity for citizens of Montana to have a great leader. I know you and your family worked hard on the campaign. I will support you again if you decide to run again in the future! You are a honorable truth teller and Montana treasure. I admire you!
In the mean time, I am so happy to have your insight in writing. I enjoyed and gifted your book Gunfight, and I have forwarded this Substack article. I encourage my family to keep learning about history of people and Montana! So much going on and changes that are harder for me the older I get. I get actually weepy and hang my head, when I read about the risk to public land. The big lie, grift and greed happening because of ongoing propaganda and pursuit of privatization by Montana politicians and donors who don't care and just out for themselves is plain to see. They are all fully aware of the truth. The chainsaw photo is example of what is happening. I don't understand the message with a big proud smile. I must not understand the joke. It's sad not funny. I guess some voted for Trump because he is funny and entertaining. All performative. He should go back to what he is good at and resign. Elon too. Wishful thinking.
The f around chainsaw cut to Veterans and Fed. employees who take care of public lands should have job protection. Seems obvious to many Montanans.
In addition, I support and shout out for the OCT Montana too. Keep fighting for environment.
What is happening had all been predicted. No surprise to many of us but unfortunately so many voters in Mt vulnerable to propaganda will feel the pain. f around and find out what is lost.
Every word you said is true. I pray something will derail this son of a bitch before the damage is irreversible. I live in OK, and I am envious of you who live surrounded by the magnificence of your home. I too can find myself easily getting weepy. My heart just hurts for those being treated so cruelly. But I have no illusions that I am safe. I am retired and the bulk of my income is SS. It’s a scary time. I’ve been to our State Capitol four times now for planned protests, but damn I wish we were marching every day.
I have been contemplating an email about Seals representing Montana, SEALing the fate of America, as well as Montana's economy. And then fundraising off his SEALness. The only S that is relevant is the "S" in Sycophant.
But, it says more about what Zinke thinks of Montanans. Much like Hillary should have said "Trump treats you like 'deplorables'", I do think we should speak of Zinke the same way. It is how he thinks of Montana voters as lacking in facts or checking the "facts" they are fed. Because I was a Seal, (indeed just learned, my photo is a full wall of the newly opened Special Warfare Museum in Florida, stuck in the mud like the war), I get the news in part from the use of Zinke's email list. As a Seal, I am on his list. And to keep getting fed that, I open one occasionally. I would recommend some one on your staff contributing to Zinke or Daines. It is educational.
While getting coffee from the coffee maker in Verona today, I said to the woman: "it should say "Canadiano". She laughed. A younger, 45ish woman on the gondola at Alpe di Suise, almost cried at the loss of American trustworthiness, recalling Reagan and the Berlin Wall.
Anyway, the damage that is occurring is not just to the worn out knees of the pants Zinke and Daines are wearing. I worry it is long lasting. We won't buy back the lands sold, or flooded; or streams clogged with mud; or the lives of Veterans lost due to cuts in V.A., or the trust of our former allies. The aluminum plant in Columbia Falls won't reopen, nor does the U.S. have the bauxite to operate it.
Zinke sure likes to co-opt his SEALness. On his official website last year, he was "Commander Zinke." I called to complain; he's our Representative, not our "Commander." They took it down, at least before the election. It was pretty sickening to see campaign signs for Zinke and Sheehy saying "Send in the SEALS!" I think Zinke can be defeated in MT-01 in 2026 with the right candidate (hint, hint Ryan Busse), especially if he continues to hide from his constituents. And I thank you for your service.

Is the slide deck available? I did not see it on glaciers website. I wanted to send it to some people who live in Montana.
Sorry but I don't have the deck - not sure if Bryce can share or not but his contact info on his website and he is a great guy.

Shoot, Jim here has an armchair and two! books.
only two books - what are the odds that Milton Freidman was a well-known tariff hater? Hmm...looks like its 100%

he teaches at harvard T-T how many credentials does he need to become a valid source?

Great writing and I appreciate that you cite supporting evidence for the doubters.
Montana is Alberta without oil & gas resources.

TRUMP WON THE STATE! SWEET TEARS OF HILLBILLY BUTTHURT! DUMB FUCKS!

I wish I could get the links to work.

Great reporting,,, Don’t Stop‼️
Ooph!! Need to send the PP to Zinke and Gianforte. It’s gonna be so rough, and so stupid. Keep reporting.
I think the numbers here are starting to hit home. Keep up the great work
