Montana is one of three states I have not set foot in - I plan to fix that. RE Ed Abbey: I actually got to know him a bit back in Arizona (where I lived for 26 years) - my best friend, Geoffrey Platts, lived in a rustic cabin out in Tonto National Forest, a Ed would visit there on occasion.
It’s an odd thing to say, but in this short time I have known you, you have taught me how and why to love Montana. Prior to that, it was simply the place my relationship took me. I’m grateful.
As for staying in the arena, I can’t actually imagine anything else for you…or Sara and your boys.
Not in Montana, but followed your candidacy and believed you were right for Montana and U S democracy.
Montana, like “red states” of the South; is a tri-state. Native American, Democrats trying for benefits and laws for everyone, Republicans trying to prevent benefits for everyone except themselves. spent time in Billings, love the area and town size along with some of the food, festivals, pumpkin patch and Ferris wheel inside. Realized politics and cultural attitudes to be repressive and non accepting. Do realize explosion of growth and most newcomers are people with money. That drives up prices and cost of living for those that have been residents for many years. Found that public education system was totally run and controlled by insider politics and the “absolute must” have insider political or family connections to be employed and allowed to work in that system.
Montana was an important part of my life for almost 4 decades. The attachment is loosening a bit now, no longer having property there and no longer able to be physically active in the outdoors. But it's not completely severed - still on some email lists of Montana organizations, attended a wedding in Bozeman last summer, may come out there soon to honor the passing of the brother of a friend, and I was proud to support your campaign with our small contributions. You set a good example of holding to honorable values, which sadly are completely absent from the Trumpian oligarchs who are spoiling everything. I recently posted that we used to be worried about the Vulgarians at the gates, but now the Vulgarians own the gates. Rome is falling again.
As a proud Montana native - Missoula born, Helena raised, and now landowner of precious ground in Ovando - it breaks my heart to see so many Montanans (??) hand over this irreplaceable gem to the wealthiest and greediest. Hindsight shows me the fortune of having grown up here in the 70s and 80s fishing with my dad, camping without another soul in sight for miles or days, and hiking trails others left as they themselves found it. Montana's mining and logging history certainly left her scars, but the lessons gleaned from those historical activities seem to have short memory. Reversing, let alone stopping, what is to continue seems impossible. You are right to quote those who knew how to appreciate, enjoy, and not fall victim to burnout. Like yourself, I will continue my pilgrimage to those places I hold dear. And, when I drive past Paws Up, I will continue to blow off my steam with an enthusiastic one-finger salute to their Mercedes vans that tote the wealthy from playground to playground. They may have money, but they can't never buy genuine happiness of knowing place.
Thank you for staying in the fight both times around. I've stood beside you in both of your campaigns, and have the utmost respect for you Ryan. Keep doing your honest work ❤ and if you and your boys ever want to fish a spring creek you are welcome on my ranch (Ovando, Sperry, easy to find :))

I moved here from Iowa and have found it difficult to get involved! 48 years of active work in the Democratic Party, Central Committee Precinct co-Captain - 30 years. Presidential Caucus Precinct Chair - three presidential races!!! Polk County, Iowa has always been a strong blue territory. I served six years in elected office (DM School Board) and numerous boards and commissions (local, state and federal)! It took two years (after numerous attempts) to get connected to the Missoula County Democrats!
I’m frustrated too, but not a quitter.
What next? I think you and your family team still have a future in the politics of Montana!!!
As for me - next month I turn 80 - but I can advise, write editorials and research.
Suzette, I am an Iowan but concerned about Montana mostly because the biggest company I freelance for is in the thick of things in Montana. I just got home to Iowa today after spending a week out in Montana for work. I wish you and Ryan Busse and anyone willing to use common sense to protect our lands the greatest success.
